Round Table “She. The Title of Artist”

October 13 (Tuesday), 2015 at 18:30
State Academic Institute of Fine Arts, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Repin, conference hall  (17 Universitetskaya emb.)

Moderators:

Veronika Bogdan – art critic, deputy director on scientific work, Museum of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts;

Maria Godovannaya – artist, co-author of the “She. The Title of Artist” project

In the 1960-70-s the feminist history of art raised a question of  a woman’s status as an artist in the world of art. Hegemony of a man-creator was called into question; feminist authors educed specific factors that excluded women from art history or that categorize their art work as secondary and insignificant, and hence unworthy of being included into history.

The Russian Academy of Fine Arts unites three institutions: the Museum of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Fine Arts, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Repin and the Scientific Library of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts.

The museum has the exhibits that give the Institute’s students an opportunity to learn in detail, analyze and copy works of art. At the same time the most of the represented authors are men as well as the most of  the Institute professors. However the overwhelming majority of students are girls who study “male” view on art during six years course at the Academy.

Issues to be discussed:

Do any structural limitations or institutional barriers prevent women from being included into art history exist? Is there an opportunity to make the quantity of female and male representatives in the museums’ collection equal and to draw attention to female artists? Is there a “will” to include more female artists in teaching staff and give them an opportunity to head workshops for senior students? How has the educational program of the Academy changed in more than 250 years? Are there any prominent female artists that graduated from the Academy within the last 10 years?

Among the participants of the round table are art historians, art critics, curators, sociologists and artists.
